Or... since you are willing to download something anyway, how about downloading VLC, which will play dvds without you having to get any extra codecs.

You also need to make sure your computer has the capability to play dvds in the first place.

Because of the additional storage space, there is more room for interactive features. This will ultimately translate to online connectivity of Blu Ray players for downloading movies and TV shows in high definition.

i read a lot of these questions and the answers. and i think most people are missing the point of what blue ray is. blue ray is a finer laser built by sony. it allows for more then 6 times the information to be stored on one disc. this has allowed for high def movies and more complex video games.
a regular DVD would not store the amount of information needed to have a hi def movie and 7.1 audio. and sense blue ray is a better hardware i think that most will soon play HD DVD as well.

Blu-ray discs contain true high definition video with many times the resolution of standard DVDs. The image quality is superior even to hi-def cable or satellite. They also include high-resolution audio that's a similar jump in quality over DVD. Plus, the Blu-ray spec allows for more sophisticated special features, including real-time web-enabled interactivity.

If you have a high-definition TV, Blu-ray is the only way to see the very best picture it can deliver.

yes, blu-ray uses special technology which allows more space and 1080p hi-def which is the best right now. It allows the best sound and picture and also becuase of the space which is usually 25 GB which is alot even computers use 80GB and this is only a movia, it has alot of extra features and things like that

In some ways yes, in others no.

Better:
- higher resolution
- broader colour gamut (range)
- superior audio formats
- advanced special features

Inferior (??)
- more expensive (disks are typically $5-$20 more expensive than the same movie on DVD)
- requires 1080p HDTV and good surround system for full benefit
- can't be played on DVD players (i.e. limits ability to play disks in portable, car, kitchen, kid's room, cottage DVD players)
- can't (easily) backup disks
- limited range of movies available (yet).
- hardware still immature and expensive ($350+)

Bottom line:
For those who are willing to pay extra (vs DVD) and have the equipment necessary to allow the benefits to be realized Blu-ray is a good choice. BUT many people will get limited benefit relative to upconverted DVDs.
